Don't grow up!

I am at Ellie's soccer game and overhear the following conversation between Tiff and Nevan:

Tiffany: Nevan, please don't grow up...because then you won't to sit in Mommys lap and snuggle. :(

Nevan: But Mommy, I don't know how to change that!

:)
If only we could really make them stop growing up. :):)

Love you three angels so much.

Love,
AuntJen

CAR CITY!

BY MILA

NEVAN: Mila! Mila!

ME: Yes?

NEVAN: Can you play?

ME:  Play what?

NEVAN:  Car City!

ME:  I am busy...

NEVAN:  But I will do your homework for you!

ME:  I am not busy with my homework.

NEVAN:  What are you busy on?

ME:  I am reading.

NEVAN:  Ugh!

ME:  Can't you see that I am reading? I have a book in my hands!

NEVAN:  Oh, I am playing by myself now.

Summer, summer, summertime...

I got a text from Tiff today, July 27, 2013
3:34pm and it read:
Nevan:
"I like drinking a cold drink.
It, like, gets the sun out of my whole body."

Grammy's Birthday

Grammy would have turned 66 today...I have felt her spirit with me all weekend especially yesterday when Mila, Ellie, Nevan and I spent the day together. We had lunch at taco bell to enjoy the bean burrito the Grammy loved so much. :) Then we spent hours at Play Mobil where Grammy loved to watch the kids playing with all the toys.

Today, I am headed to drive our favorite path long A1A to view the gorgeous ocean while playing favorite songs that she and I used to sing-to together. :)

I miss you everyday, Mom.
The kids and I talk about you every time I am with them and they too have so many amazing memories with you.

We will never forget you Grammy and will celebrate you by living each day to the fullest just like you did.

Ellie and Aunt Jen...

Heart mending

Today has been a really hard day; well actually this past week has been with Mom.
She has been having more trouble than ever and I'm really sad about it...I don't feel strong at all at the moment although everyone around me keeps saying how much I am and how they couldn't do it, yada yada.

This month is just a touchy month for me I think, so every thing makes me tear up....

Anyway, I got back to the house from my knee doctor appointment and Tiff was here with Mila, Ellie and Nevan....when I opened the door Nevan came running over to me and said "Aunt Jen!" then immediately grabbed my legs and gave me the best hug ever.

It's amazing how the little things these angels do mend the little tears in my heart....

I love you three more than you may ever know.

Friday, March 30, 2012

It's times like this.....

As I sit and watch my Mom sleep each night I contemplate life...
Not just what has been, but what is to come.
Memories flood in and play through my mind as if I'm sitting in a dark movie theater all alone...goosebumps and tears are my new makeup style.
The beautiful moments Mom and I have shared in just my 35 years on this earth play over and over like a
beautiful precious broken record in my mind. Wanting more and blessed for even these...
And I find myself staring at her and imagining what her life was like pre-kids; based on all her stories of being a child in Ocala then falling in love with my Dad and following him to various Air Force bases to be with the
man she loved. It was truly a journey for love, all the way to the Philippines where they were married.
Such a beautiful 36 year love story. And really, it's not just Mom and Dad but the family they created when Tiff and I were born.
We are so blessed for the time we all shared together all those years growing up...so precious....ones we will
never be able to replace.
Love you Fresh Gresh's. :):)

Where have you been?

Wow! Time sure has flown by since I last posted here.
Mom had a stroke on January 2nd and was admitted to JFK hospital again then 8 days later released to Morse Life for rehabilitation. After 30+ days there and not any major progress I decided to get her the hell out of there. She had been asking please please, so when no progress was made, I agreed to find a way....

I have taken a leave of absence from work and am here in her home with her 24/7 to make sure she is taken care of, comfortable and finally feeling some peace. Her three babies Newman, Sinatra and BA couldn't' be more thrilled that she is home.

Every day is a new challenge but I have embraced what is and am making the most of every moment.

Will write more later; need to go to bed now as Mila is here for a sleepover and is fast asleep in my room which is what I need to do. Not sleeping much can't be good for me. So nitey nite for now. Enjoy these few pics below of recent moments in time. :):)

Thank you to all who helped raise the money to continue the research needed to save lives with heart disease.
We were able to raise $1,362.47 at our Jump Rope for Heart event.
Our Heart Hero who raised the most money this year was Elana in Mrs. Ks class.
Elana will get to be the PE teacher for the day and will receive the Heart Hero metal. She raised a whopping $200.00!

Did you know that Grammy...

Dear Mila, Ellie and Nevan,

I hope one day you are able to look back through all of the posts that Grammy has and continues to make on this blog and cherish them the same way I do. They sure are special times!

Grammy is one of the most amazing women I know.
Did you know that Grammy worked hard for over 40 years to provide for her family?
She did! That is older than I am right now typing this! :) Wow!
Grammy is a wonderful example of selflessness. She sacrificed a lot of personal time and freedoms as we were growing up so that her family would never go without. It is funny the things we remember over the years; I specifically remember Grammy's coolots! She always seemed to wear one of three pairs because she never wanted to spend money on herself that could be used for the family. I never liked those coolots back then but now I see the reason behind so many things that she did...and now I love her coolots! :)

Grammy has always put everyone else's feelings and needs first. When Daddy lost his job my Mommy worked multiple jobs, even late into the night, so that she could provide for us. I sit back now and wonder how it was possible that she did all of that in addition to being a Mommy to me and Tiff; how hard that must have been for her.

I will try and share more stories about Grammy as I think of them; Grammy truly is a treasure and I hope you three know that about her and are enjoying every single moment that you can with her. You have already learned a lot from her and will continue to and will learn and grow from her example.

Love, AuntJen

When I grow up!

I spent Sunday October 30th with the kids at the Boynton Beach Halloween Festival.
We had lots of fun and afterwards went for a visit to my apartment, which Nevan was quite fascinated with. He ran all around then found Daddy's old cars and began playing with them on the floor for a good 20 minutes.

On the ride home the girls were asking me about working and what I do everyday.
Somewhere along the way Ellie exclaimed, "When I grow up I want to work at Party City and put all of the party stuff back on the shelves!"
Mila agreed,"Oh yes, well and I will blow up all the balloons for people!"

Love and marriage

Mila and Ellie each earned a certificate for free pizza at Pizza Hut by participating in the county library summer reading program and the other night I was invited to go with them to Pizza Hut which I did. While there Mila sat with me on my side of the booth. She looked up at me with a very excited expression on her face and said Grammy I have a surprise to tell you. Her next words were Guess what? I have a boyfriend! My response: You do!?!, tell me about him, but don’t get married too soon (a phrase I have said to her hundreds of times without reaction other than giggles).

Yes I do and we’re not getting married soon but we did talk about our wedding today. Grammy his name is Constantine, and he speaks three languages! Grammy I love him SO much (with enthusiastic emphasis on the “so much.”

She was just so excited!
I felt older than dirt, thinking about how grown up she seemed at age seven! What a wondrous treat it is to be near my grands, and this particular event was extremely special! I pray I have more years left to enjoy them all. The three sweetest children in all God’s world.

I am so blessed: first two special daughters of whom I am so proud, and now my grands: Mila and Ellie and Nevan all of whom I could start hugging and continue forever and ever.

What a beautiful honor. I love you,Daddy!

He's all boy!

From the first few moments of meeting Nevan, it was so apparent that he would be all boy. He loves to do things I've never seen the girls take any interest in. The latest concentration that is so cute is that he has discovered how to turn on and off lights. He flips the wall switch for room lights, not too spectacular, but I love this one: He "discovered" my remote control in the living room that controls the ceiling fan and the light that's part of it. He first discovered the button for the light and was happy turning the light on and off. Now I saw him yesterday hold the remote close to his face while studying all the buttons. He finally chose one and Eureka! it was the one that turns the ceiling fan on high which pleased him greatly. He is not shy about trying new things. I'm sure he will keep discovering how things work with his natural curiosity and no fear of failure holding him back. He's game to try anything it seems. He seems so mature in many ways. He is utterly and completely adorable and charming.

One proofreader and one knowledgeable gamer

Yesterday the girls were having a fairly brief "playdate" at Grammy's while Mom went to an appointment.

Ellie quickly retrieved the "trouble" game and began playing and asked if I would play too a little later, which we did although she kept having to keep me straight with the rules, I messed up many times but she always corrected me quite patiently.

Mila had brought over a book with her to read, "Swiss Family Robinson," which she completed fairly quickly. Once she was done she announced she had already finished the whole book. and then said "Grammy, there's a mistake in this book," and looked astonished that an error could be in a printed book. She turned right to the page of which she spoke and showed me the typo she had found!!! It was E comma lizabeth. [E,lizabeth] She was annoyed they put a space and a comma in the middle of her great grandma's name.

Learning the world isn't perfect can be a shocker.

EDWARD L. GRESH Obituary by Gainesville Sun

Edward Leon Gresh, 65, of Gainesville, FL passed away May 4, 2011 accompanied by his family in the E.T. York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville after having suffered a sudden heart attack on April 23rd.

"Big Ed" will be remembered as an outstanding Cox Cable employee and gregarious Tropical Sno owner-operator during the 1980s and since then a highly recognizable character around the UF campus. For more than twenty years as Senior Communications Engineer he designed and built campus-wide networking solutions and earned many accolades, including the University President's Award for Excellence.

He will also be celebrated for his efforts to help those in need, his abiding love for his children and grandchildren, and his unmistakable zest for life.

Ed was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and spent most of his childhood there; he lived in Hawaii as a toddler and in Raleigh, North Carolina as a teenager. He attended East Carolina University and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity for two years before enlisting in the Air Force. He ultimately served as a telecommunications engineer at Clark Air Base in the Republic of the Philippines, where he married Myra N. Cash in 1968. After his honorable discharge he moved to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida and later raise his family. While Ed and Myra divorced in 2004, they remained affectionate friends, fondly keeping in touch over the years. In July of 2009, he and Peggy Goldberg held a beautiful wedding ceremony in the Baumann Center on Lake Alice, followed by a Hawaiian honeymoon.

He was preceded in death by his father Lt. Col. (USAF) John Andrew Gresh, mother Wilhelmina "Eleanor" Masavage Gresh, stepmother Audrey Hope Gresh, and his guardians Marvin Reynolds and Martha Adeline Masavage Reynolds ("Aunt Agum"), whom he treasured as dearly as beloved parents.

He is survived by his loving wife "Peggy" Margaret A. Goldberg of Gainesville, his devoted daughters Jennifer Gresh of West Palm Beach, FL and Tiffany de Berry of Lake Worth, FL, and his cherished grandchildren Kamila, Elana, and Nevan.

An open house in celebration of his life will be held on his beloved UF campus Saturday, May 21st from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Atrium Room 200 at Ustler Hall. E-mail jengresh@att.net for details.

Ed was a proud Galloneer blood donor, and his family asks all who are able to honor his memory by donating a pint of blood to their local blood bank. Memorial contributions to E.T. York Hospice Care Center are appreciated.

The park pose!

Mom emailed me this picture taken on her iphone from the park on 4-6-11.
So you know me, I just had to share it's so cute.

Mom said that Tiff was using her phone to take a pic of the girls playing in the tree and when told to smile, Nevan came running over and wanted to be in the picture, too!
SO adorable. I sure do love you Mila, Ellie and Nevan!

Ellie and Mila have a phone in their room

Ellie called me the other day at 8:30 a.m. and asked what I was doing. When I said I'm still lying in bed because I just woke up, she said that she thought maybe Mila had already gone to school because she was alone in her room so she thought she should check with me.

We chit chatted for a couple of minutes before she said she had to go downstairs and "check on" Mommy and Nevan.

So grown up!

Ellie looks out for herself

This evening we celebrated Aaron's 37th birthday with a special steak and veggies dinner prepared by Jennifer and Tiffany, and followed by a delicious and beautiful birthday cake made by Aaron with Mila and Ellie's help.

It was a good time, but all good times must come to an end. As I prepared to go with Jen who was giving me my ride home, I kissed Mila bye and got a lovely and big hug. Tried to do the same with Ellie who raised both arms up and said, "Enough with the hugging and kissing!"

I think she'll be able to take care of herself pretty well out there in that big old world.

My beautiful sugar tongue girl

I had the pleasure of enjoying a delicious dinner last night with my favorite
de Berry crew and Grammy!

The spread included fried rice, tofu, cabbage with ginger dressing and Japanese Okra...it was delicious!

At the end of dinner Ellie chose dessert from her candy bag.....Lik-a-Stix!
As you can see, she thoroughly enjoyed it (as did her teeth and tongue!)

I love you, my silly Ellie!!

The fantabulous Nevan BUDD de Berry!

Ever since Nevan arrived in August 2009, I have had the most unusual emotional feeling when I look into his eyes or simply view his face. It is a bizarre feeling, but in a good way.

It's hard to describe, but I feel like he already knew me before he arrived, and was very, very ready to be friends. I feel as if he's looking into my soul when he looks and smiles at me. He is so loving and affectionate that I am overwhelmed emotionally when I'm near him.

Sometimes when he looks at me I have an overriding emotion that he knows the future, that we'll be close and he's happy about that. My experiences with him have strengthened my belief and understanding of the premortal life as well as the belief that families are forever. I sincerely believe that. And I think he knows and understands that at this time. He will temporarily lose that understanding as he grows and will need to rediscover it for himself later in life, but for now it is coming naturally to him.

I cannot begin to describe how totally in love I am with him. He is the sweetest and happiest baby who brings joy to everyone around him. God bless you Nevan!

Water is a necessity of life

Tonight Mila and Ellie are at Grami's for their second sleepover. Daddy is here painting and gave them their baths and readied them for bed. I read them their stories and they got into bed somewhere around 8 or shortly thereafter.

However, they've had a few "false starts" to their night's sleep and have been out for mediation for several different problems. 1. Ellie was kissing Mila too much and wouldn't quit even when Mila asked her to. 2. They were cold and needed a blanket. 3. Ellie got Mila's chin with an uppercut. 4. A couple of other "important events" which have escaped me now.

The Pièce de résistance came a few moments ago when Ellie came into my bedroom with a very somber facial expression. When asked what the problem was she very pleadingly said, "If you can't drink water you'll die."

Stopped me in my tracks. They both got their water and are in bed again. Hopefully for the night. Wishful thinking!

They are the joys of my life! And sweet Nevan too. He's such a little flirt. When he and Tiff were leaving tonight he leaned towards me with a big smile to get a hug. Wow what a feeling!

The luckiest grandma EVER!

A few minutes ago I was slowly and lazily awakening, almost fully awake but not unlazy enough to get up yet when I heard the sound of little feet on my stairs. I listened with anticipation and sure enough, around the corner at the top of the stairs came two beautiful angelic beings with the sweetest smiles on their faces that one could imagine, and an aura of love surrounded them.

They were each carrying a token of love for their Grammy. My favorite cup filled with lemonade (my favorite drink) and a plate with one pancake on it on which was written in red (icing?) "We hope you feel better" and there was also a big red heart drawn on the pancake.

What a wonderful life I have. To be loved by Mila and Ellie is totally indescribable. The joy they bring to my life is beyond comprehension. I am SO very blessed.

Ellie will be a great mother

I was in the living room alone with Ellie the other day while she was playing with her dolls.

Unexpectedly she stood up and said in her most serious tone of voice: Baby Jane is thirsty. I've gotta pump!

Ellie is tuned in

The other morning I heard Ellie admonishing Mila:

  • Mila, when you cry, I cry.
  • Mila when you laugh, I laugh.

Mila adds columns!

Mila has been adding single digits for weeks now. Tiff showed her how to carry and look how well she did! She was so proud of herself she wrote "Kamila's numbers, I was 5 years old when I did this!" Isn't that adorable!

Can you believe this!!!!! Whatta kid! And Ellie knows some single digit addition already too!

I love a decisive person!

Yesterday afternoon Mila came upstairs proudly carrying a printed recipe for brownies that she’d gotten from the PBS Kids website for Caillou.

We read the ingredients and then the instructions together. Her face was absolutely lit up with excitement at the prospect of having the “secret” to making brownies. She is so eager to know and to do everything.

As we discussed the fact that we should pick a day to make the brownies, we also discussed the fact that the recipe called for eggs to be added to the mixture but did not specify how many were needed.

She made an immediate “command decision” and stated firmly that we would use one.

Food is apparently scarce to misbehavers

The other night everyone was trying to be tolerant of a crabby five year old at dinnertime. She was asked to go potty before dinner, and protesting each step of the route, finally arrived in the bathroom. The family was patiently awaiting her return before saying grace. But we weren't hearing sounds that led us to believe any progress was being made, only grumbling, protesting, sounds.

We said the prayer and began eating without Mila. More grumblings could be heard from the bathroom, becoming more insistent-sounding. Suddenly the most pathetically dramatic voice was heard saying, "I'm staaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrvvvvvvvvvvvviiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggggggg! I'll neeeeveeerr get to eat!"

Much as we tried not to, we all laughed heartily, IF guiltily, and waited with trepidation to see what's next!

Finally she emerged from the bathroom and joined us for dinner. A tragedy was narrowly averted and she was able to eat just in time before collapsing from hunger and starvation. I'm pretty sure she'll be nominated for an Oscar for that performance. It was definitely Oscar worthy.

What a way to wake up!

This morning I lay in bed trying to convince myself I didn't have to get up yet. (Lazy).

Then I heard Ellie at the bottom of the stairs, "Grami, are you awake?" I was silent, trying to go back to sleep. Again, "Grami, are you awake?" This one was a bit louder. Still no response. Much louder, "Grami, are you awake?" Then more footsteps and Mila announced, "Let's do it together!"

VERY loud and in unison: "Grami, are you awake?" By this time I was laughing too hard to sleep. "Yes, I'm awake." Silence. Nobody there apparently.

No, that was incorrect. A bit of whispering and then I heard the door handle being tested and a jubilant announcement, "It's unlocked!" Followed by "Let's go up!"

Miss Crazy Garfunkle Hair was the first to arrive. She immediately crawled under the covers with me. Mila must have had some momentary mission as it was about two minutes before she arrived. She, too, crawled under the covers. Followed quickly by our kitty cat guest, BA, who proceeded to lay on top of Mila's legs, which brought gales of laughter. And warm legs too.

Ellie grabbed my flashlight from my nightstand and shined it on the ceiling for several minutes pronouncing that it was a half moon and it's still nighttime. I could buy that if it meant I could go back to sleep.

The dratted alarm went off and reality arrived. Time to get ready to go to church.

But what a happy mood I'm in. I'm SO blessed.

Thank you Heavenly Father for these special little sweet beings. They are so very precious to me.

Friday, August 7, 2009

Duh!

Mila, Ellie, and I were having lunch at Chick-Fil-A today. Ellie pointed at the fire extinguisher on the wall and said, "That's a fire thing."

Seizing a "teaching moment" I said, "That 'fire thing' is called a fire extinguisher. The word extinguisher means it can be used to 'extinguish' or put out a fire. Can you say extinguisher?"

Ellie smiled and pronounced it beautifully.

So I turned to Mila and said, "Can you say extinguisher?" She replied, obviously somewhat miffed at the question, "Of course I can. It's English, isn't it?"

Tiffany de Berry Last night, putting the girls to bed, I gave my normal lecture: no talking, no getting out of bed, no moving. Ellie asked her frequent follow-up: "Mommy, can we BREATHE?" ("Yes.") Then both proceeded to grill me further: "Mommy, can we YAWN?" ("Yes.") ". . . sneeze?" ("Yes.") ". . . cough?" ("Yes.") Followed, of course, by 30 to 60 seconds of feigned yawning, sneezing, and coughing.
